Originally, I was just interviewing for a quality inspector position at another company and got turned down. I was about to leave when, by chance, I rode by on my bike and ran into the general manager of the company I’m with now. His car was broken down outside, and he was on the phone. I was chatty and hands-on, and I identified the issue with the anti-vibration arm. We lifted his car all morning. I removed the tire, re-inflated it with an air gun, and changed the spare. He offered me a cigarette, and we chatted. That’s when he found out I was looking for work. I didn’t think much of it at the time; I just helped him fix his Land Rover. I thought I was just helping a random passerby. I should have realized that, being near an industrial area, he was a leader. I overlooked that, and that’s how I got an interview opportunity on the spot.
